Protection from pollution
Clear Collective was born in 2019 out of the continued necessity of protection from growing soot, smog, and smoke drifting through the air. Every year it seemed to grow worse and worse. Surgical masks are effective against pollution, but they aren’t functional for all-day and repetitive use. They were made for the operating room and not the sidewalk. At our family property in Bilpin, NSW near the Blue Mountains, we have had first-hand experience of the destructive capabilities of bushfires and the poor air quality they create. For us to go outside and function, at least to some similar degree, we decided to proactively create Clear Collective and the collections of face masks we now offer.
Bushfires are the normal
The 2019 and 2020 bushfire season saw hotspots from Brisbane to south of Mallacoota. Imagery from space shows Sydney and Canberra completely covered in atmospheric smoke. By the middle of January in 2020, over 18 million hectares of land were burnt across all of the Australian states and territories. Earlier in late December a fire broke out close to the interior of Melbourne, just north in the area of Bundoora, Mill Park, South Morang, Greensborough, and Plenty. Seen from space, all of these fires pushed smoke into every metropolitan area of Australia, including Melbourne.
